Nigeria Slip to Fourth in Africa Despite Holding 26th Spot Globally

Posted : 21 July 2026

Nigeria's Super Eagles have dropped to fourth in Africa in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking, despite maintaining their 26th position in the world.

The three-time African champions have not played a match since their 2-1 defeat to former European champions Portugal in an international friendly in June, leaving them with no movement in the global standings.

Morocco remain Africa's highest-ranked nation, climbing one place to sixth in the world after an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign that saw the Atlas Lions reach the quarter-finals.

Senegal continue to occupy second place on the continent despite dropping three places in the global rankings, while Egypt moved into third in Africa after advancing to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, where they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to eventual runners-up Argentina.

Algeria complete Africa's top five after slipping one place in the latest rankings.

At the top of the global standings, newly crowned FIFA World Cup champions Spain reclaimed the No. 1 position, displacing Argentina, who dropped to second following their defeat in the final.

France, England, and Brazil complete the world's top five teams.

FIFA also announced that the next edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking will be released on Oct. 7, 2026.

Although Nigeria retained its global position, the drop in the continental rankings highlights the increasingly competitive nature of African football. The Super Eagles will be aiming to improve their standing when international action resumes later in the year.
