AFCON 2025: Nigeria Set to Face Mozambique in Round of 16

Posted : 30 December 2025

After topping Group C in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set to face Mozambique in the Round of 16, aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Mozambique emerged as the strongest of the potential third-placed teams that Nigeria could face in the knockout stage. The Mambas recorded one win and one loss in their first two group matches, finishing with three points—enough to rank above other third-placed contenders.

Nigeria, meanwhile, has enjoyed a commanding start to the tournament, collecting six points from their first two Group C matches. The Super Eagles are favorites to finish top of the group and need only to avoid defeat against Uganda in their final group match on Tuesday, December 30, to secure first place.

Under the AFCON format, the top two teams from each of the six groups automatically qualify for the knockout stage, along with the four best third-placed teams, completing the Round of 16 lineup.

CAF regulations stipulate that the winners of Group C face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups A, B, or F.

With Group A and Group B fixtures concluded, Comoros and Angola finished third in their respective groups with two points each, failing to secure a spot among the best third-placed teams.

Mozambique, currently third in Group F with three points from two matches, is therefore Nigeria’s most likely opponent. The Southern Africans will face Cameroon in their final group match on December 31, but they have already qualified for the knockout stage regardless of the result.

Elsewhere, Zambia’s hopes of progressing ended following a heavy 3–0 defeat to hosts and title favorites Morocco. Angola also failed to advance despite holding Egypt to a 0–0 draw in their final group match, finishing with just two points.

The Round of 16 clash between Nigeria and Mozambique is scheduled for January 5, 2026, at the Fez Stadium, with kickoff set for 8:00 pm.
