Nigeria’s WAFCON Hopes Dented as Jamaica Pull Out of United Kingdom Training Tour

Posted : 13 May 2026

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have hit a major roadblock. The planned training tour of the United Kingdom has been officially cancelled. This follows the sudden withdrawal of Jamaica from a high-profile international friendly.

The training camp was scheduled to take place from May 23 to 28 in London. It was designed to help the Super Falcons sharpen their tactics before defending their title in Morocco. However, administrative issues within the Jamaican camp forced them to pull out of the arrangement.

Head coach Justine Madugu expressed frustration over the latest development. He noted that several other national teams declined to play Nigeria on such short notice. Many teams are also restricted because the tour falls outside the official FIFA international window.

This cancellation is the latest in a string of disappointments for the Nigerian team. A double-header against Cape Verde was cancelled earlier this year. A proposed four-nation tournament in February also failed to take place.

Consequently, the Super Falcons have played only two competitive matches in 2026. Both games were against Cameroon in March, resulting in a 3-2 aggregate victory for Nigeria. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade recently voiced her concerns regarding the lack of quality preparation matches.

The stakes remain incredibly high for the ten-time African champions. The upcoming WAFCON serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Nigeria must reach the semi-finals in Morocco to secure an automatic ticket to Brazil.

Nigeria will compete in Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt, and Malawi. All group matches are scheduled to take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. The tournament begins on July 25, 2026, leaving the Nigeria Football Federation with little time to fix the schedule.

The NFF is now looking toward the next FIFA window in June. They hope to secure two friendly matches against other WAFCON-qualified nations. This remains the final opportunity to build chemistry before the continental showpiece begins in July.
