FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Rout Samoa 4-0 to Reach Round of 16

Posted : 27 October 2025
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, advanced to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, have booked their place in the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after a convincing 4-0 victory over Samoa in Rabat.

Queen Joseph led the charge with a brace, taking her tournament tally to three goals. Captain Shakirat Moshood added another from the penalty spot, while defender Azeezat Oduntan sealed the win with a stunning goal from the wing.

After suffering a 1-4 defeat to Canada in their opening match and a narrow 0-1 loss to France, the Flamingos knew they needed a comprehensive win to keep their qualification hopes alive. They approached the game with determination and wasted no time asserting control.

Joseph opened the scoring in the 13th minute, latching onto a precise pass from Moshood before lifting the ball past goalkeeper Grace Ae. Three minutes later, Ae denied Chisom Nwachukwu with a fine save, but she was beaten again in the 27th minute when Moshood converted a penalty after Samoa’s Holly Leapai handled the ball in the box.

The Nigerians continued to dominate, and in the 36th minute, Nguemo Terlumun weaved through the Samoan defense to set up Joseph for her second goal of the match. Just before halftime, a quick exchange between Joseph and Mariam Yahaya nearly produced a fourth goal, but Ae kept Samoa in the game with another strong save.

The Flamingos had a chance to extend their lead early in the second half, but Moshood’s penalty was read perfectly by Ae after Terlumun was fouled in the box. However, the fourth goal eventually came in the 67th minute when Oduntan fired home from a cross, capping off a dominant display by the Nigerian side.

Goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu also impressed, making two crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The emphatic win ensured that the Flamingos, bronze medallists at the 2022 World Cup in India, advanced to the Round of 16, keeping their hopes alive for another strong finish on the global stage.
