Nigeria's teenage table tennis sensation, Kuti heads for ITTF W’Africa Regional championships

Posted : 23 April 2024

Nigeria's table tennis teenage sensation, Matthew Kuti, will lead Team Nigeria as they begin their title defense at the 2024 ITTF West Africa Regional Championships in Lome, Togo, from April 25 to 27.

Kuti, a double medallist at the 13th African Games in Ghana, will make his debut at the regional tournament, which serves as the qualifier for the 2024 African Championships in Ethiopia in October.

Kuti will face experienced players like former champion Oba Oba Kizito of Cote d'Ivoire and local player Fanny Kokou in Togo.

But Kuti won't be alone in Lome; he'll have teammates like Muiz Adegoke, Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, Samuel Boboye, and Matthew Fabunmi in the men's team.

Another African Games medallist, Hope Udoaka, will lead the women's team alongside Ajoke Ojomu and three junior stars – Kabirat Ayooola, Aisha Rabiu, and Ize Sezue.

The team will be coached by Dotun Omoniyi, who was an assistant to acting national coach Segun Toriola at the 13th African Games in Ghana.

In Lome, 32 men and 29 women from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, and the host, Togo, will participate in four events (team and singles for men and women).

Kokou, leading the home team, will be joined by returnee Mawussi Agbetoglo; Assou Atarou, Desire Akakpo, Elias, and Agbodjan.

The host nation's women's team also includes Eli Akouto Amegee, Fanida Ayoko Amah, Golda Kayi Amah, Celine Mouzou, and Light Senami Maella Avodagbe in their ranks.

In Kampala, Uganda, 41 men and 29 women from Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and host Uganda will compete at the East African Regional Championships.

They will participate in four events (team and singles for men and women) from April 22 to 25.
