Nigeria’s national U-17 women’s football team, popularly known as the Flamingos, have discovered their opponents for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. The Nigerian side will face Guinea in the next stage of the competition following Guinea's decisive victory over Niger. Guinea progressed comfortably with an aggregate score of 8-2 after winning both legs of their previous round.
The Guinean team secured their spot by winning the second leg 3-0 on home soil. This followed an impressive 5-2 victory in the first leg played away from home. Their clinical performance across the two matches has set the stage for a high-stakes West African showdown against Nigeria.
The Flamingos did not participate in the opening rounds of the qualification series. They were granted a direct bye into this stage due to their status as the highest-ranked African team in this age category. This top seeding reflects Nigeria's long-standing dominance in youth women's football on the continent.
The first leg of this encounter is scheduled to take place between May 22 and May 24. Nigeria will then host or travel for the return fixture shortly after, with the second leg dated between May 29 and May 31. The winner of this two-legged tie will advance to the final qualifying round scheduled for July.
Nigeria enters this fixture with one of the most successful records in the history of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The Flamingos have qualified for eight of the previous nine editions of the global tournament. Their historic bronze-medal finish at the 2022 World Cup in India remains their finest achievement to date.
More recently, the team reached the quarter-finals in the Dominican Republic and the round of 16 during the 2025 edition in Morocco. These consistent performances have established them as the team to beat in African qualifying. However, the Guinean side enters this match with significant momentum and scoring confidence.
The final goal for both nations is to secure a spot in the upcoming tournament hosted by Morocco. Under new FIFA regulations, Morocco will host the U-17 Women’s World Cup annually through 2029. This provides more frequent opportunities for development, but the path through the African qualifiers remains highly competitive.
