Nigeria gains as Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea stars excluded

Posted : 23 May 2025

The Nigeria Football Federation has gained a significant advantage in their pursuit of several English-born Premier League players after their exclusion from the latest England squad announced by the Football Association on Friday morning.

England manager Thomas Tuchel chose to omit Jacob Murphy of Newcastle United, Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea, and Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri from his roster for next month’s upcoming fixtures. This decision could provide Nigeria with a valuable opportunity to intensify efforts to secure these players for the Super Eagles.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is closely tracking the progress of all three athletes, who are eligible to represent Nigeria through their heritage. Their potential switch to Nigeria would strengthen the national team’s options considerably.

Though Tuchel evaluated Murphy and Tosin during Premier League games in April and May, neither player made the cut for England’s forthcoming matches, including a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Andorra on June 7 in Barcelona, and a friendly against Senegal on June 10 at the City Ground in Nottingham.

Eighteen-year-old Nwaneri is widely anticipated to be named in England’s U21 squad for the 2025 European Championship, though the official squad announcement is still pending. His involvement with England’s youth setup leaves his senior international future undecided.

All three players enjoyed strong 2024–2025 seasons: Murphy contributed 23 goal involvements across 40 appearances for Newcastle, Nwaneri impressed with 11 goal involvements during his breakthrough season at Arsenal, and Tosin recorded a personal best of four goals from his defensive position.

Among them, Tosin remains the only one who has yet to be capped in competitive matches by England at any level, while Murphy and Nwaneri are provisionally tied to England through youth appearances. Meanwhile, notable Nigerian-descended players Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke were included in Tuchel’s latest squad for the June internationals.
