Nigeria booked their place in the African Playoffs final for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a thrilling 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon at the Moulay Al Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday evening. The Super Eagles will now face either Cameroon or DR Congo on Sunday, with the winner earning a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs in Mexico next March.
Gabon’s hopes of making their World Cup debut were dashed, and the Panthers will now shift focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
The Super Eagles dominated possession for much of the match, with Wilfred Ndidi controlling the midfield. Nigeria’s striker Victor Osimhen had an early opportunity to score in the 17th minute, but his header went wide. Four minutes later, he directed another header on target, only for Gabon’s goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba to make a sharp save. Despite Nigeria’s first-half dominance, the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
After the break, Nigeria continued to press, and Akor Adams broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, intercepting a loose pass and finishing past Mbaba. Just when it seemed Nigeria had the victory, Mario Lemina equalized for Gabon in the 89th minute, forcing the game into extra time.
In extra time, Nigeria regained control. Chidera Ejuke scored his first-ever international goal to give the Super Eagles a 2-1 lead, followed by Osimhen netting his 30th international goal in the 102nd minute. Osimhen struck again in the 110th minute, bringing his tally to 31 goals and cementing Nigeria’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Gabon.
