Nigeria Defeat Algeria 2-0 to Reach AFCON 2025 Semifinals

Posted : 11 January 2026

Nigeria put in a commanding performance as they defeated Algeria 2-0 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals at the Marrakesh Stadium on Saturday, January 10, to book a date with Morocco in the semifinals.

Second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams saw the Super Eagles reach the penultimate stage of the tournament for the third time in four editions, having lost 2-1 to Ivory Coast in the 2023 final.

Eric Chelle's side applied pressure from the outset, threatening after just two minutes when Semi Ajayi connected with a free-kick but directed his header over the crossbar.

Victor Osimhen should have done better six minutes later, heading over from close range after mistiming his jump from a corner. Their first attempt on target came in the 23rd minute from a counter-attack, with Ademola Lookman firing straight at Luca Zidane.

The West Africans continued to create chances, and Osimhen was denied by a brave save from Zidane three minutes later after receiving Lookman's threaded pass into the box.

Ramy Bensebaini came to Algeria's rescue in the 29th minute, clearing the ball off the line after Osimhen met Calvin Bassey’s header from a free-kick, leaving Zidane stranded.

Akor Adams wasted a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 37th minute, blazing over after Alex Iwobi set him up from Zidane's clearance.

The first half ended goalless, but Nigeria started the second half strongly. Onyemaechi delivered a precise cross to the back post, where Osimhen headed past Zidane for his fourth goal of the tournament.

The same combination created another chance seven minutes later, but Osimhen’s header lacked the power to beat Zidane after connecting with Onyemaechi's cross.

Osimhen turned provider in the 57th minute, racing onto Calvin Bassey's through-ball and setting up Adams, who tapped into an open net.

Adams missed another header in the 79th minute after Onyemaechi’s cross carried too much pace, while Algeria produced their first real chance moments later when Baghdad Bounedjah cleared the bar from distance.

The woodwork came to Algeria’s rescue soon after, as Adams’ header struck the left post from a cross into the six-yard box with Zidane beaten.
