Nigeria Clinches Mixed 4x400m Gold at the 2026 African Athletics Championships in Ghana

Posted : 14 May 2026

Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team produced a dominant performance to claim gold on the second day of the 2026 African Athletics Championships. The quartet consisting of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and veteran Patience Okon-George finished with a time of 3:16.41. They successfully outpaced the team from Botswana, who took the silver medal with a time of 3:17.88.

Kenya completed the podium by securing the bronze medal in a closely contested race. The victory at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium reinforces Nigeria's strength in relay events on the continent. This gold medal follows the team’s recent success at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Botswana, where they secured a spot for next year's World Championships.

Patience Okon-George played a crucial role as the anchor leg of the relay. Her experience was vital in maintaining the lead against a surging Botswana team. This triumph brings Nigeria’s total gold count to two at the ongoing competition.

The relay victory added to a successful day for Team Nigeria in Accra. Earlier in the session, Tobi Amusan won her third consecutive African title in the women’s 100m hurdles. Other notable performances included Sade Olatoye’s silver in the hammer throw and a bronze for Adaobi Tabugbo in the hurdles.

Nigeria’s total medal haul now stands at eight after two days of high-level competition. This tally includes two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals. The coaching staff expressed satisfaction with the team’s momentum as the championships move into the final stages.

The schedule for Thursday remains busy with finals expected in the 400m and 800m categories. Nigeria will also participate in the qualifying heats for the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays. Fans expect the West African giants to remain at the top of the standings as more track and field finals approach.
