Nigeria has risen to 38th place in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, according to the global football governing body. Despite the climb, the Super Eagles remain behind Africa’s top five teams—Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria—who continue to dominate the continental rankings.
Spain retains the number one spot in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking, with Argentina, France, and England following closely. The updated rankings reflect a busy international window that concluded UEFA and CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers and settled the final CAF and AFC play-off fixtures. FIFA noted that the new table will guide the draws for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament and the European play-offs scheduled in Zurich on Thursday.
Brazil was the biggest mover in the top ten, rising two places to fifth, while Portugal and the Netherlands dropped to sixth and seventh. In total, 149 matches, including 79 friendlies, contributed to the ranking adjustments.
Nigeria’s recent results contributed to their rise, including a 4–1 victory over Gabon and a 1–1 draw with DR Congo, followed by a 4–3 loss on penalties. These performances earned the Super Eagles 1,502.46 points, placing them fifth in Africa behind Morocco (1,713.12 points), Senegal (1,648.07), Egypt (1,520.68), and Algeria (1,516.37). Nigeria narrowly lead Tunisia, who are 40th with 1,497.13 points, while Ivory Coast and DR Congo trail with 1,489.59 and 1,442.50 points, respectively.
Though Nigeria’s climb offers limited consolation after missing out on the 2026 World Cup, the update comes at a crucial time ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December. A strong performance at the tournament could further boost the Super Eagles’ ranking and consolidate their position on the continental and global stage.
