NFF Shifts Elective Congress After CAF Confirms Super Eagles Qualifier

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rescheduled its 2026 Elective Congress to Sunday, September 27, following the confirmation of the Super Eagles' opening qualifying match for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The congress was initially scheduled for Saturday, September 26, in Lafia, Nasarawa State. It will now take place a day later after the proposal received unanimous approval during an extraordinary virtual General Assembly.

Delegates at the Elective Congress will choose members of the NFF Executive Committee, who will oversee the administration of Nigerian football for the next four years.

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau said the decision became necessary after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that Nigeria's opening AFCON qualifier against Madagascar will be played on Friday, September 25, 2026.

According to Gusau, several individuals contesting positions in the federation's elections are expected to be part of the Super Eagles' official delegation for the qualifier. Holding the congress the following day would have made it difficult for them to travel to Lafia and participate in the electoral process.

He explained that the NFF Executive Committee considered the fixture clash before recommending a one-day postponement to Congress for approval.

"In view of this development, the Executive Committee considered it necessary to seek the approval of Congress for a one-day postponement of the Elective Congress," Gusau said.

The proposal was unanimously adopted during the virtual meeting after a motion was moved by a member of Congress and seconded without opposition.

The revised schedule means delegates and contestants will now have additional time to travel from the Super Eagles' international assignment before participating in the federation's elections.

The Elective Congress remains a significant event for Nigerian football, as it will determine the leadership responsible for managing the country's football affairs over the next four-year cycle. The newly elected Executive Committee will oversee the development of the domestic leagues, national teams, grassroots football and the implementation of the federation's strategic programmes.

The Super Eagles' qualifier against Madagascar will also mark the beginning of Nigeria's campaign for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, making September a crucial month for both the national team and the football federation.
