President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), has expressed satisfaction with the Super Eagles’ recent performances in the Four-Nation Unity Cup Tournament in London and the international friendly against Russia in Moscow, stating that the Federation's sporting objectives were met.
“I can tell you categorically that we achieved our sporting objectives, which were the most important in this case,” Gusau said. According to him, the primary aim of both engagements was to give Coach Finidi George and his technical crew a platform to assess potential new additions to the squad in a competitive setting.
“The principal goal was to provide windows for the coach and his crew to take a look at new players that might be positive additions to the team going forward,” Gusau added.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Ghana and a dramatic penalty shootout victory (5-4) over Jamaica in the Unity Cup, as well as a 1-1 draw against Russia in Moscow, Gusau praised the output and commitment of the players.
He particularly highlighted the performances of newcomers such as Benjamin Frederick, Felix Agu, Christantus Uche, and Igoh Ogbu, as well as the impact of home-based talents Papa Daniel Mustapha, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, and Collins Ogwueze.
“In Russia, we saw more of Uche, and Tolu Arokodare scored a classic poacher’s goal. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye impressed on his return, and captain William Troost-Ekong led the backline with authority,” he noted.
The Super Eagles drew level against Russia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium after Semi Ajayi’s own goal had put Sbornaya ahead, with Arokodare netting the equalizer in the second half.
Gusau concluded by affirming that the team now has more tactical and positional depth heading into the next phase of the FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. “Now, we have options in defence, midfield, and attack, and I’m quite satisfied with the team’s output in the three matches. I’m confident the technical crew is as well.”
