NFF Orders Super Falcons Technical Crew to Step Down With Immediate Effect

Posted : 18 August 2026

The Nigeria Football Federation has directed Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew to step down with immediate effect following the team's disappointing 2026 campaign.

The decision was taken by the NFF Executive Committee after an assessment of the team's performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The federation confirmed the directive in a statement on Monday.

Nigeria entered the tournament as defending champions but endured a difficult start. The Super Falcons suffered a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening Group C match.

The nine-time African champions recovered from the setback and progressed from the group stage. However, their title defence ended in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.

The early exit also meant Nigeria could not secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The Falcons then entered the World Cup play-off route but suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa, ending their hopes of reaching the global tournament.

The result represents a major setback for Nigeria, who have been a dominant force in African women's football. The Super Falcons had won the previous WAFCON title and were seeking another strong campaign under Madugu.

Madugu had taken charge of the team with expectations high ahead of the tournament. During preparations, he acknowledged that the Falcons still had areas to improve despite friendly victories over Senegal and Tanzania.

The NFF decision now leaves the national team without its previous technical leadership. The federation is expected to begin the process of restructuring the coaching setup as it prepares the Super Falcons for their next international assignments.

The change also comes at an important stage for the squad, with Nigeria needing to rebuild confidence after missing the 2027 World Cup. The NFF will now face pressure to appoint a technical team capable of restoring the Falcons' position among Africa's leading women's football nations.
