NFF Lists Conditions for Super Eagles' Return to Lagos

Posted : 15 October 2026

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified that it is not rushing to move the Super Eagles’ home matches from Uyo to Lagos. The federation says any change of venue will depend on the readiness of the Teslim Balogun Stadium and other important considerations.

The position follows reports that the NFF is considering Lagos as a possible venue for Nigeria’s upcoming home fixtures in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. The discussion comes after the Super Eagles suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second match of the series.

According to a senior NFF official who spoke anonymously, Uyo remains the team’s current home venue. The official said the federation would not make a sudden decision to relocate the team because a change of ground could affect the players’ preparations and performance.

“Lagos is under consideration, but Uyo remains the venue for our games,” the official said.

The federation is also expected to consult the players before making a final decision on a possible move. The NFF is considering friendly matches at the renovated Teslim Balogun Stadium to assess the facilities and determine how local supporters respond to the team playing in Lagos.

The Super Eagles have played most of their home matches in Uyo for nearly a decade. This history means the federation must consider the potential impact of changing venues before making a final commitment.

The Teslim Balogun Stadium is not yet considered ready to host an international fixture, according to the official. The NFF plans to send inspectors to assess the facility after the Lagos State Government completes the renovation work.

Time is another concern. With the proposed fixtures approaching, the federation must ensure there is enough time for inspections and the necessary approvals before confirming a new venue.

Meanwhile, the NFF and the Super Eagles technical crew, led by head coach Eric Chelle, have started monitoring players who could be selected for the upcoming matches. Preparations are continuing while the federation awaits confirmation of the fixture dates from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The proposed schedule includes a home match in Uyo on November 11 and a return fixture in Zanzibar on November 15. However, both dates remain subject to CAF confirmation.

The NFF official added that the players’ reporting date and other preparations would depend on the approved schedule. The squad is expected to be announced five days after the match dates are confirmed, taking player availability into account.
