Following a heartfelt evaluation of his 10-year service with the Senior National Team of Nigeria (Super Eagles), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) wishes to honor William Troost-Ekong after his announcement of immediate retirement from international football on Thursday, 4 December 2025.
Captain Troost-Ekong was a dedicated, selfless, and humble leader of the Super Eagles for many years, having begun his international journey in 2015.
He served with zeal, passion, and patriotic fervor, gracing the pitch with pride, purpose, and a commendable sense of duty.
Even before becoming captain, Troost-Ekong was known as a disciplined, ambitious, and pleasant teammate, wearing the green-and-white jersey with joy, focus, and determination.
Troost-Ekong’s performances in the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2019, 2021, and 2023 serve as a benchmark for younger footballers to emulate.
His silver and bronze medals from the continental championship are milestones in a remarkable career that also included appearances on the world’s biggest stage — the FIFA World Cup — where he scored crucial goals for Nigeria.
With 83 caps across five major competitions, Troost-Ekong leaves the international stage as a fulfilled player, reflecting on a decade-long career with immense pride and achievement.
Notably, he scored three critical goals during Nigeria’s journey to the AFCON final in Cote d’Ivoire and was rightfully named the Man of the Competition (Most Valuable Player).
As he retires from international football, the Nigeria Football Federation wishes William Troost-Ekong the very best in his future endeavors and pledges support in helping him achieve his goals within the sport.
