The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, an initiative designed for schools across the country. The announcement was made on Monday, following the tournament’s endorsement by the Senate Committee on Sports Development, led by Senator Abdul Ningi. The competition is an annual project of the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation and seeks to honour the late Nigerian football icon.
Sam Okwaraji, a dedicated Nigerian international, tragically collapsed and died on August 12, 1989, while representing the country in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. His untimely death shocked the nation, and his legacy has since symbolized patriotism and selfless national service.
In a letter signed by Ruth David, the NFF’s Acting Director of Competitions, the federation stated that its approval recognizes the noble goals of the tournament. It noted that the championship would not only inspire young participants but also significantly contribute to the growth of grassroots football in Nigeria. The NFF also commended the foundation’s dedication to youth and sports development.
The federation encouraged the organisers to ensure full compliance with FIFA regulations and Nigeria’s existing football laws. The competition is expected to begin later this year, providing a platform to celebrate Okwaraji’s legacy while nurturing future stars for Nigerian football.
