NFF cracks down on officiating as referee Adamu faces indefinite ban

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved swiftly to address growing concerns over officiating in the Nigeria Premier Football League after imposing an indefinite suspension on referee Yakubu Adamu over his controversial penalty decision in Rangers International’s clash with Bendel Insurance.

The suspension, announced by the NFF Refereeing Development Committee on Tuesday, takes immediate effect and sidelines Adamu from all football-related duties pending further investigation.

The decision follows widespread criticism that trailed the referee’s call during the NPFL encounter, where he awarded Rangers a penalty later deemed inconsistent with the Laws of the Game by the committee.

Rangers converted the penalty and eventually secured a 2-1 victory, but the incident quickly overshadowed the match as fans, analysts, and stakeholders questioned the quality and consistency of officiating in the domestic league.

In its findings, the committee stated that the controversial decision significantly influenced the outcome of the game and damaged the image of the competition.

The NFF, while reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on questionable officiating, stressed that referees are expected to uphold professionalism, fairness, and strict compliance with the Laws of the Game at all times.

According to the federation, disciplinary measures such as this are necessary to maintain public confidence in Nigerian football and ensure accountability among match officials.

The development has once again intensified discussions around refereeing standards in the NPFL, with many observers calling for improved training, monitoring, and reforms to strengthen officiating across the league.

The decisive action taken against the match official underscores the NFF's commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency within the NPFL.
