NFF Confirms September 26 Elective Congress in Lafia

Posted : 03 July 2026

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially notified its member associations and football stakeholders that its Elective Congress will take place on September 26, 2026, in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State.

The notification was contained in a letter dated June 26, 2026, and signed by NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi. According to the federation, the notice was issued in line with Article 32 of the NFF Statutes and followed the directive of the Executive Committee.

The communication was sent to the federation's member associations, Congress delegates, state football associations, league bodies, and the recognised associations representing coaches, referees and players. The notification formally sets the electoral process in motion ahead of the September Congress.

Preparations for the election began earlier this year when the NFF constituted its Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee. Both bodies were inaugurated on April 2, 2026, following the Federation's Extraordinary General Assembly held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

A total of 12 members were appointed to oversee the electoral process. Seven members make up the Electoral Committee, while the Electoral Appeals Committee consists of five members responsible for resolving disputes that may arise during the elections.

The Electoral Committee has been tasked with organising and conducting the elections in accordance with the provisions of the March 2026 edition of the NFF Statutes. Its responsibilities include supervising nominations, verifying candidates' eligibility and ensuring the election is conducted in a transparent and credible manner.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Appeals Committee will hear and determine complaints or petitions arising from the electoral process. The body is expected to ensure that all grievances are handled fairly and in line with the federation's regulations.

The September 26 Elective Congress is expected to attract delegates from across Nigeria's football community and will determine the leadership that will guide the federation through its next administrative cycle. The election comes at an important period for Nigerian football, with preparations continuing for major continental and international competitions across all national teams.

As the process gathers momentum, attention will now shift to the release of the electoral timetable, nomination procedures and the emergence of candidates expected to contest the federation's top positions.
