NFF and NSC Deny Golden Eaglets Coach Uwejamomere’s U-23 Appointment

Posted : 20 October 2026

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) have dismissed reports suggesting that Golden Eaglets coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere has been appointed assistant coach of Nigeria’s U-23 men’s national team, known as the Olympic Eagles.

Officials from both organisations separately denied the reports, insisting that Uwejamomere has not been appointed to the team’s technical crew. The clarification comes as Nigeria prepares for an important qualifying contest on the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Uwejamomere recently led the Golden Eaglets at the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Boys Tournament in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Despite his work with the youth team, senior officials said there had been no decision to add him to the Olympic Eagles’ coaching staff.

A senior NSC official, speaking anonymously, described the reports as inaccurate and explained that Uwejamomere continues to contribute to Nigerian football in other technical roles.

“There is no truth in that report,” the official said.

The NSC official also highlighted Uwejamomere’s experience as a video analyst, revealing that he has worked with the senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, for the past four years. He also served as a video analyst for the Super Falcons at the last Olympic Games.

The official’s comments indicate that Uwejamomere remains involved in the national team structure, despite the absence of any confirmed appointment to the U-23 coaching crew.

Olympic Eagles Prepare for DR Congo Qualifier

The clarification comes ahead of Nigeria’s two-legged qualifying tie against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the race for a place at the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The tournament will also form part of Africa’s qualification pathway to the men’s football event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Nigeria are scheduled to face DR Congo in the second qualifying round, with the first leg listed for November 9 and the return fixture for November 17, 2026. The tie will determine which country advances to the final qualifying round in March 2027.

According to the NFF official quoted in the report, the Olympic Eagles already have a complete backroom staff ahead of the qualifying campaign. The official rejected speculation about Uwejamomere’s appointment and said no proposal had been made to add the Golden Eaglets coach to the U-23 technical crew.

Nigeria must overcome DR Congo and win another two-legged tie in March to qualify for the 2027 U-23 AFCON. The final tournament will feature eight teams, including hosts Egypt, with the competition playing a key role in determining Africa’s representatives at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
