Neymar Still in Brazil’s World Cup Plans as Ancelotti Backs Star’s Recovery Push

Posted : 14 April 2026

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has expressed cautious optimism that Neymar could still feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided the forward proves his full fitness in the coming months. The Brazilian star, who has struggled with recurring injuries in recent years, remains under close evaluation as he continues his recovery and return to competitive action.

Ancelotti emphasized that Neymar still has time to convince the coaching staff of his readiness, stating that the next two months will be crucial in determining his World Cup fate. While acknowledging the player’s quality and experience, the coach made it clear that selection will depend entirely on physical condition and match fitness rather than reputation alone.

The 34-year-old forward has been working his way back from a serious knee injury and surgery, which has limited his appearances for both club and country since 2023. Despite these setbacks, Neymar has recently returned to action and shown flashes of his scoring ability with Santos, gradually rebuilding his form through domestic competition.

Ancelotti noted that Neymar’s progress has been encouraging, highlighting his recent performances and goal contributions as signs of improvement. However, he stressed the importance of consistency, fitness, and the ability to handle the demands of international tournament football.

Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, has not featured regularly for the national team since his injury troubles began. His absence has opened the door for younger talents, but his experience and legacy continue to make him a major talking point ahead of the tournament.

While Neymar remains determined to represent Brazil at another World Cup, Ancelotti has reiterated that only players in peak physical condition will make the final squad, setting a clear benchmark as preparations intensify.
