Neymar Ruled Out of Brazil World Cup Opener Against Morocco Following Calf Injury

Posted : 13 June 2026

Brazil will begin their campaign for a historic sixth world title without their star forward Neymar. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the iconic attacker cannot participate in their opening Group C fixture against Morocco on Saturday. The dynamic forward continues to nurse a painful grade two calf injury. He suffered this muscle strain right before entering the national team pre-tournament training base.

The injury has completely prevented the national team all-time top goalscorer from joining group training sessions. He has spent the last three weeks working through individual rehabilitation programs away from his teammates. Ancelotti chose to retain the veteran in his squad rather than drafting a fully fit player like Chelsea forward João Pedro. The Italian tactician emphasized that Neymar provides invaluable experience and immense leadership for the younger members of the roster.

Medical reports from Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte indicate the attacker might miss the entire group stage. The original recovery roadmap anticipated a brief shutdown; however, Neymar has not played competitive football since May 17. Rushing the player back onto the pitch could aggravate the tear and cause permanent structural damage. The medical team plans to take an incredibly cautious approach before authorizing full match clearance.

The Seleção face a difficult opening test at MetLife Stadium against the defensive-minded African powerhouses. Ancelotti remains optimistic that his main creator will transition back into full group training by next week. The technical staff heavily prioritizes getting him in peak physical shape for upcoming fixtures against Haiti and Scotland. Fans globally will have to wait a little longer to see the famous number 10 shirt back in action.
