Neymar Returns to Santos Facing Uncertain Future After Brazil World Cup Exit

Posted : 17 July 2026

Neymar has rejoined Santos following Brazil's disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with uncertainty surrounding both his club career and long-term future. The veteran forward has indicated he has played his final match for the Brazilian national team after the Selecao were eliminated in the Round of 16, bringing an emotional end to his international journey.

The 34-year-old endured another injury-disrupted tournament, making only brief appearances across two matches. His lone contribution was a penalty goal in Brazil's 2-1 defeat to Norway, a result that ended the five-time champions' hopes of lifting a sixth World Cup title. Neymar was visibly emotional after the match, fuelling speculation about both his international and club future.

After returning to his boyhood club from Al-Hilal in January 2025, Neymar has struggled to stay fit. Knee problems restricted him to limited appearances for Santos this season, although he still showed flashes of his quality by contributing goals and assists whenever available. His current deal was initially due to expire this year, although reports indicate Santos have been working to secure his long-term future.

The striker's future at Santos has also been linked to developments off the pitch, with club leadership changes expected later this year. While discussions over a contract extension have continued, reports suggest any long-term decision could depend on the outcome of the club's presidential elections and its sporting project moving forward.

Neymar's father and agent has publicly encouraged his son to continue playing despite the disappointment of the World Cup. In an emotional message, he urged the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star to rediscover his joy for football rather than walking away from the game after Brazil's early exit.

A move to Major League Soccer has also been widely discussed, with reports linking Neymar to clubs in the United States. Although previous talks with FC Cincinnati did not result in a transfer, interest from MLS remains a possible option should he decide to leave Santos, where he is now focused on regaining full fitness before making a final decision on the next stage of his career.
