Newcastle Urged to Keep Lewis Hall as Expert Names Him Player of the Season Amid Chelsea Transfer Links

Posted : 21 March 2026

Lewis Hall is eager to remain at Newcastle United despite growing transfer interest from several top clubs this summer. That is the view of football consultant and former chief executive Keith Wyness, who has also named the 21-year-old his player of the season at St James' Park.

Newcastle plan to reject any bids for Hall this summer, with former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown confirming that the club will not entertain offers regardless of who comes calling. Market experts suggest that any negotiations would have to start at a minimum of £65 to £70 million, a fee the Magpies' board is not expected to accept.

Wyness, who has held chief executive roles at Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen, spoke exclusively to Football Insider's Inside Track podcast about Hall's remarkable season. He said: "To me, he's been the player of the season at St James'. I think he's been fabulous." Wyness added that Hall's display against Barcelona's Lamine Yamal in the Champions League last-16 first leg was a statement of his quality and believes the defender is in contention for England's World Cup squad this summer.

Hall has won 58.9% of his duels this season and recorded nearly 100 ball recoveries, demonstrating how fully he has adapted to the physical demands of Eddie Howe's high-press system. He maintains an 85.8% pass completion rate in the Premier League, ranking among the top full-backs for progressive carries and overlapping runs. He has started 18 Premier League matches this term, firmly establishing himself as the club's first-choice left-back.

Hall's performance in the 1-1 draw against Barcelona drew widespread praise, with many labelling him England's best left-back heading into the 2026 World Cup. The impressive campaign has resulted in Hall being recalled to the England setup; he earned his first two senior caps during Lee Carsley's interim reign in 2024.

The interest in Hall stretches well beyond Chelsea. Scouts from Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, and several top La Liga clubs have all been keeping tabs on the defender. Despite the attention, Newcastle are preparing a new contract for Hall with a significant pay rise as a clear signal to suitors that negotiations are not on the table.

Head coach Eddie Howe described the original signing as "a really smart piece of business" and has expressed hope that Hall will continue at the club for a long time. Howe has also urged caution around comparisons, saying he wants to protect Hall and keep the praise measured for a defender still developing his game.

Hall himself has spoken about leaving Chelsea at the right time, stating that the move to Newcastle has worked out perfectly and that he has achieved things he would not have managed had he stayed at Stamford Bridge. Hall signed permanently for Newcastle on 1 July 2024 after joining on loan the previous season in a deal worth £28 million, with up to £7 million in add-ons.

Newcastle currently sit ninth in the Premier League table and face a battle to secure European qualification. Retaining Hall will be central to the club's ambitions regardless of which competition they find themselves in next season.
