Newcastle United loses 7-1 to Chelsea with Sanusi scoring

Posted : 09 March 2024

Newcastle United U21s' struggles continue as they extend their winless streak to six games, enduring a challenging 7-1 defeat against Chelsea in a Premier League 2 clash at Whitley Park on Friday night.

Trevan Sanusi, making his third start for the Magpies in the Premier League 2, faced off against Chelsea defender Richard Olise, the younger sibling of Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, who earned a Super Eagles invite in 2021.

Chelsea took an early lead as Dylan Williams fired a precise shot into the far corner, but Newcastle swiftly responded, with Sanusi leveling the score just three minutes later. The England U17 international of Nigerian heritage showcased his skill by racing into the Chelsea box and delivering a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

In the seventeenth minute, Chelsea regained the lead with a goal from Ronnie Stutter, and this advantage held as the teams entered halftime.

The second half witnessed Chelsea's dominance, as Leo Castledine extended their lead in the 46th minute, adding another seven minutes later, effectively putting the game beyond Newcastle's grasp.

In the 83rd minute, Dujuan Richards further widened Chelsea's lead, and in stoppage time, Stutter and Diego Moreira netted additional goals, emphasizing Chelsea's dominance.

Sanusi, who attracted interest from Arsenal and Chelsea before joining Newcastle United last summer, faces the challenge of proving his worth to the team. The 16-year-old forward aspires to follow in the footsteps of the Ameobi brothers, who successfully ascended through Newcastle United's academy ranks to make significant contributions at the senior level.
