Newcastle sporting director, Dan Ashworth, seeks move to Manchester United amidst Ineos overhaul plans

Posted : 19 February 2024

Newcastle United's sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has been placed on gardening leave as he expresses his desire to join Manchester United, who are eyeing him for their restructuring plans inspired by Ineos. Despite the interest, formal discussions between the two clubs have not commenced.

Ashworth, contracted with Newcastle until 2025, cannot work for another club without compensation. Newcastle is considering seeking well over £10 million from Manchester United, while the latter is determined not to be pressured into paying an excessive fee.

Ashworth, renowned for his role, is reportedly linked to Newcastle's controversial £55 million signing of Sandro Tonali, who faced a 10-month ban for breaching gambling regulations.

Ineos, set to confirm their 25% ownership of Manchester United this week, could make a substantial move if they secure Ashworth.

Ashworth, who had success with England's youth teams in 2017 and played a role in Brighton's Premier League rise, is reportedly interested in joining Old Trafford, having previously worked with Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford during his tenure at the Football Association.

The sporting director took leave after leaving Brighton before joining Newcastle in 2022. His potential move to Manchester United aligns with the club's broader restructuring plans and potential Ineos partnership.
