Newcastle Prepared for Eddie Howe’s Departure Months in Advance

Newcastle United had been planning for Eddie Howe’s eventual departure for up to nine months before the former manager stepped down, sporting director Ross Wilson has revealed.

Howe left his position in July after almost five years in charge. Although he had initially expected to continue into the new season, the 48-year-old decided that taking a break was the right decision after an intense period at the club.

Despite the unexpected timing of his exit, Wilson said the change did not catch Newcastle completely off guard. The club had been working on contingency plans for a potential managerial transition for eight or nine months, allowing them to move quickly when Howe made his decision.

Newcastle eventually appointed Matthias Jaissle, who had already been identified as a potential candidate during the club's succession planning. Wilson said Jaissle became the clear first choice because his approach matched Newcastle's preference for an aggressive, high-intensity and attacking style of football.

The German coach also fits the club's recruitment strategy, particularly his record of developing younger players during his time at Red Bull Salzburg. Newcastle have placed greater emphasis on signing players with significant development potential as they reshape the squad.

Jaissle has made an unbeaten start to his Newcastle tenure, with the Magpies drawing against Liverpool and Bournemouth while defeating Tottenham in the Premier League. They also progressed in the League Cup with a victory over West Brom.

The managerial change was only one part of an extraordinary summer at St James' Park. Newcastle also lost several important players, including Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimaraes. Wilson admitted that while some departures had been anticipated, Guimaraes' move to Arsenal was not part of the club's original plans.

The Magpies also had to adjust their recruitment plans after missing out on some of their preferred targets. Nevertheless, Wilson insisted that the majority of the summer's activity reflected the club's broader strategy rather than a reaction to chaos.

Newcastle have not given Jaissle a specific public target for his first season. Instead, the club's leadership is focused on building a team capable of regularly competing for major honours while remaining compliant with financial regulations.

Wilson also stressed that player trading will remain an important part of Newcastle's long-term model. The club wants to develop players and benefit from their progression, while accepting that some may eventually leave if their careers accelerate elsewhere.
