Newcastle United fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday, preserving their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Premier League season. The result leaves Matthias Jaissle’s side with five points from their opening three league matches.

Bournemouth started strongly and took the lead in the ninth minute. Alex Scott’s shot took a deflection and fell into the path of Marcus Tavernier, who reacted quickly to finish past Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. The visitors continued to threaten with their aggressive pressing and created several chances before doubling their advantage.

The second goal arrived in the 35th minute. Justin Kluivert’s long-range effort struck the post before rebounding off Hornicek, while Scott kept the attack alive and delivered a cross that deflected off Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw and into the net. Newcastle were suddenly facing a difficult fight to remain unbeaten.

Harvey Barnes immediately gave the hosts hope. The Newcastle winger cut inside from the left and curled a superb finish beyond Djordje Petrovic in the 37th minute. The goal came only 101 seconds after Bournemouth had made it 2-0 and changed the mood inside St James’ Park.

Newcastle improved after the interval but struggled to create clear chances. Bournemouth still looked dangerous, yet the visitors were unable to add a third goal despite having the stronger overall attacking numbers. Opta recorded 17 Bournemouth shots compared with eight from Newcastle, while the Cherries also won the expected-goals battle 1.50 to 0.66.

Jaissle turned to his substitutes as Newcastle searched for an equaliser. Jacob Ramsey, introduced in the 63rd minute, eventually delivered in the 88th minute when he calmly finished into the bottom corner after Bournemouth failed to clear their lines. The goal sparked loud celebrations and completed Newcastle’s comeback.

Jaissle admitted Newcastle had struggled to match Bournemouth’s intensity in the first half. He said he had “mixed feelings” but was proud of the reaction after his team fell two goals behind.

Marco Rose was left frustrated after Bournemouth surrendered another lead. The Cherries have now scored first in all three league matches this season but have failed to win any of them, becoming the first team in Premier League history to record that sequence. They have dropped seven points from winning positions.

The draw keeps Newcastle unbeaten after a 2-2 draw with Liverpool and a 2-0 victory over Tottenham. Bournemouth, meanwhile, remain without a Premier League win under Rose and have two points from their opening three matches.
