Newcastle 2-2 Chelsea: Woltemade Double Cancelled Out as Blues Rally at St James’ Park

Posted : 20 December 2025

Newcastle United were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at St James’ Park on Saturday after a spirited second-half fightback by the visitors erased a two-goal deficit. The result left Newcastle frustrated, particularly after a contentious penalty decision went against them.

Nick Woltemade opened the scoring for the Magpies in the fourth minute following precise build-up play from Jacob Murphy, marking his first career brace in a Premier League game. He doubled the advantage in the 20th minute, converting an Anthony Gordon cross after a lengthy VAR review, which highlighted ongoing issues with Semi-Automated Offside Technology.

Despite Newcastle’s strong start, Chelsea gradually grew into the game. Reece James sparked their comeback with a stunning 30-yard free-kick that left goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale fully stretched, pulling one back and shifting momentum in favour of the visitors.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his disappointment over a denied penalty when Trevoh Chalobah fouled Anthony Gordon inside the box. Former referee Mike Dean later described the incident as “100 per cent a penalty,” fueling debates over the match officiating.

Chelsea completed their turnaround with a well-worked goal from João Pedro, assisted by an unexpected contribution from goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. The long clearance found Pedro, who turned his marker Malick Thiaw and slotted the ball past Ramsdale, highlighting a rare Premier League goalkeeper assist for Chelsea.

Team changes also played a role in the contest. Newcastle made four adjustments from their midweek Carabao Cup win over Fulham, with Lewis Hall, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Nick Woltemade returning to the starting lineup. Chelsea, meanwhile, demonstrated resilience under head coach Enzo Maresca, showing that the team continues to fight despite recent challenges.

The draw leaves Chelsea in fourth place on the Premier League table, while Newcastle climb to 11th, setting the stage for the final weekend fixtures before the Christmas break. Fans were treated to a dramatic encounter filled with individual brilliance, tactical shifts, and contentious moments that will be discussed long after the match.
