New Zealand and Belgium Face Win-or-Go-Home World Cup Showdown

Posted : 26 June 2026

New Zealand and Belgium will contest a decisive Group G encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday morning, with both sides still chasing a place in the knockout rounds. The match at BC Place in Vancouver, with qualification to the last 32 hanging in the balance.

The All Whites have endured a frustrating campaign despite showing encouraging signs in attack. They opened the tournament with a 2-2 draw against Iran before falling 3-1 to Egypt in Vancouver. Having taken the lead three times across those two matches, New Zealand have managed just a single point and currently sit at the bottom of the group standings.

Belgium have also failed to meet expectations. The Red Devils began with a 1-1 draw against Egypt before being held to a goalless draw by Iran. Although they have dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, Belgium are yet to score through one of their own players, with their only goal of the tournament coming via an own goal by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany.

Their task has become more difficult with defender Nathan Ngoy unavailable after receiving a red card against Iran. The suspension leaves head coach Rudi Garcia with a defensive reshuffle ahead of one of Belgium's most important matches in recent years.

The qualification scenarios are straightforward. New Zealand must win to keep their World Cup hopes alive, while Belgium could still progress with a draw if group leaders Egypt defeat Iran in the other Group G fixture taking place simultaneously in Seattle. However, Garcia has made it clear that his side will approach the game with victory as their only objective.

New Zealand winger Elijah Just believes Belgium's mixed results should not fool anyone into underestimating their quality. He acknowledged that the Europeans entered the tournament as favourites to progress and expects them to play with urgency given the importance of the match.

Garcia echoed those sentiments, admitting Belgium have not started the tournament as they had hoped but insisting his players must respond when it matters most. The Belgian coach stressed the need for recovery and focus ahead of what he described as a decisive contest.

Just remains New Zealand's biggest attacking threat after scoring both goals in the draw with Iran. Although he was less influential against Egypt, the 26-year-old could find more opportunities on the counterattack against a Belgium side expected to dominate possession.

For Belgium, Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard will once again be relied upon to unlock opposition defences. His dribbling and creativity stood out in the draw with Iran, and the Red Devils will hope he can inspire the attacking spark they have lacked throughout the tournament.

Saturday's encounter will also mark the first-ever meeting between New Zealand and Belgium in men's international football, adding another layer of intrigue to a fixture with World Cup progression at stake.
