Ndidi nets another as Leicester City thrashes Southampton, condemning Aribo

Posted : 24 April 2024

Wilfred Ndidi, the Super Eagles midfielder, continued his impressive form by scoring his second consecutive goal for Leicester City during their dominant 5-0 victory over Southampton at the King Power Stadium.

The encounter between Championship leaders Leicester City and promotion hopefuls Southampton held significant importance for both teams, setting the stage for a crucial battle.

Despite missing Kelechi Iheanacho from the starting lineup, Leicester City's coach Enzo Maresca entrusted Ndidi with a starting role once again, while Joe Aribo, in excellent form, started for Southampton.

Although Southampton maintained possession dominance in the first half, it was Leicester City who posed the greater threat, eventually seizing the lead after 25 minutes through their star forward Issahaku Fatawu's goal.

Despite Southampton's promising start to the second half, they struggled to create clear opportunities, while Leicester City extended their advantage with Ndidi's goal, showcasing his sharp instincts by converting a well-placed header from a cross by Stephy Mavididi.

The momentum remained firmly with Leicester City as Fatawu secured a brace, and Jamie Vardy added to the scoreline, sealing a resounding 5-0 victory over Southampton.

Aribo, representing Nigeria, played for 83 minutes, contributing significantly with 53 touches, an 89% pass accuracy, and one successful dribble, while Ndidi, in addition to his goal, made notable defensive contributions with two clearances and offered attacking threat with three goal attempts and two key passes.

Following their defeat, Southampton's chances for automatic promotion to the Premier League are dashed, leaving them reliant on the playoffs for promotion, as they are now unable to secure a top-two finish.
