Nathan Tella Targets Super Eagles Return After Injury-Hit Season

Posted : 16 July 2026

Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella has revealed his ambition to return to the Super Eagles after an injury-disrupted 2025/26 season limited his opportunities for both club and country.

The 27-year-old endured a frustrating campaign as a series of muscle, knee and foot injuries kept him on the sidelines for extended periods. The fitness setbacks forced him to miss 29 matches in all competitions and restricted him to just 17 Bundesliga appearances.

Despite his limited playing time, Tella still contributed to Bayer Leverkusen's attack by scoring one goal and providing six assists. The Nigerian is now focused on staying fit and earning regular minutes during the 2026/27 season.

Speaking during Leverkusen's pre-season preparations, Tella welcomed the competition for places in the club's attacking line-up. He believes the challenge will push him to improve and help him perform at his highest level.

"We have several wingers in our squad, but this competition for the few available spots is exactly what I need so I can get the best out of myself," Tella said.

The versatile forward admitted that he occasionally prefers playing in one fixed position. However, he believes his ability to operate across different attacking roles gives him a better chance of featuring consistently.

"There are times when I'd prefer to be tied to one position. But this way, my chances of playing are automatically greater. My goal, of course, is to accumulate as many minutes as possible," he added.

Tella also spoke about his desire to wear the Super Eagles shirt again. Injuries and Nigeria's failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup prevented him from making a greater impact during the recent international cycle.

"I want to get back into the national team," Tella said. "Of course, it was very frustrating that Nigeria didn't make the World Cup and I missed many qualifying matches. But now a new season and a new attempt are beginning. To play for Nigeria again, that's my dream."

The winger will be aiming to impress Bayer Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag as he competes for a regular starting place in the new campaign. Consistent performances at club level could also strengthen his chances of earning a recall from Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

With a fresh season ahead and his fitness restored, Tella will hope to rediscover his best form and re-establish himself as an important option for both Bayer Leverkusen and the Nigerian national team.
