Nasarawa United FC claimed their first-ever top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table after a flawless 2-0 victory over visiting Katsina United in their 2025/2026 Match Day 6 fixture at the Lafia City Stadium.
The Solid Miners put in a dominant performance, with goals from last season’s top scorer, Anas Yusuf, who struck from 35 metres on the stroke of halftime, and right-back Abubakar Abdullahi, who sealed the win with a fine finish 17 minutes from full time.
Abdullahi, who captained the side on the day, was later voted Man of the Match for his commanding display.
The win, Nasarawa United’s third consecutive home victory, propelled them to the top of the NPFL standings with 13 points from six matches, boasting four wins, one draw, and one defeat, with a goal difference of +4. Katsina United, meanwhile, remain in fourth place with nine points.
Looking ahead, the Solid Miners will aim to extend their winning streak when they travel to Benin City next weekend to face Bendel Insurance, currently 15th on the table, before returning home to host Rangers International.
In recognition of their performance, the team received a ₦500,000 cash reward from the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, who was joined at the stadium by other top government officials. Team captain King Osanga received the reward on behalf of the players, expressing gratitude for the state’s continued support.
Coach Mangut Mbwas praised his players’ effort but urged focus:
“It’s a joy to win today. We planned for this and are achieving our goals gradually. The league is a marathon, not a sprint. We should have scored more goals, but my players were a bit anxious in front of goal. Still, the team is growing in confidence game by game.”
Katsina United coach Azeez Muhammad admitted his side’s lapse in concentration cost them the match:
“It was a normal game, but we lost our heads in the second half and failed to convert our chances. They took theirs, and the better side won today. We’ll go back and work on our finishing. Officiating was good, no complaints.”
