2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 5: Nasarawa United Seal First Away Win Against Bayelsa

Nasarawa United FC secured their first away victory of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback win over Bayelsa United FC on Match Day 5 at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.

 

Jawad Mustapha gave the hosts the lead in the 36th minute with a powerful header, but Ekeson Okorie equalized for the Solid Miners just before halftime.

 

Both sides created chances in the second half, but it was substitute Victor Onovuke who made the difference, scoring in the 89th minute to hand Nasarawa United all three points.

 

The visitors held firm against late Bayelsa pressure to secure a precious win, their first on the road this campaign.

 

With the result, Nasarawa United climbed to second place on the NPFL standings with 10 points, just one point behind leaders Enyimba FC, who edged Bendel Insurance 3-2 in Aba.

 

Next up, Nasarawa United will host Katsina United FC on Match Day 6 at home on Sunday.

 

After the game, coach Mangut Mbwas praised his team’s resilience:

“It was a very tight game because the pitch was waterlogged after a heavy downpour. We conceded through an error, but we stayed focused and got what we worked for. Bayelsa were under pressure after losing their last home game, and our plan was to frustrate them, which worked perfectly. Credit to my players for getting the job done against a very determined Bayelsa side.”
