Nasarawa United secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Tournament after eliminating hosts Katsina United 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina.
The Solid Miners showed composure under pressure to end the hosts’ campaign, with goalkeeper Ameh Godwin emerging as the hero of the encounter after producing a series of important saves.
Nasarawa United made a bright start and took the lead as early as the fourth minute when right-back Abubakar Abdullahi found the net to put his side ahead.
Katsina United, backed by their home supporters, responded strongly after the break and eventually restored parity in the 71st minute through Abba Musa.
With neither side able to find a winning goal before the final whistle, the decisive contest moved to the penalty shootout.
Nasarawa United kept their composure from the spot, converting four of their five attempts to secure victory and send the home side out of the competition.
Godwin played a key role in the victory, making crucial interventions during the match before maintaining his composure in the shootout. His outstanding display earned him the Man-of-the-Match award from the tournament organisers.
The result extends Nasarawa United’s impressive pre-season preparations and sets up a semi-final meeting with Kwara United on Tuesday, August 18, at 4 p.m.
Kwara United booked their place in the last four after defeating Niger Tornadoes in the other quarter-final encounter.
