2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 21: Nasarawa United Edges Niger Tornadoes to Reclaim Winning Form

Posted : 19 January 2026

Nasarawa United FC, the Solid Miners, bounced back from two consecutive defeats to secure a 2–1 home victory over North-Central rivals Niger Tornadoes in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 21 clash at Lafia City Stadium.

Two quick goals in the first half set the tone for the Solid Miners. Anas Yusuf, last season’s top scorer, converted a penalty in the 13th minute, followed by a strike from mid-season recruit Adekunle Oluwasegun nine minutes later. The visitors pulled one back through Ahmadu Liman in the 85th minute, but it was not enough to prevent Nasarawa United from claiming all three points.

Sunday’s victory takes the Solid Miners to 35 points, six behind table-topping Rivers United, who have 41 points from the same number of matches.

The win was celebrated by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, and the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Sports Affairs, Hamza Ibrahim Moyi, alongside the club chairman, Solomon Babanjah, and a large contingent of supporters.

Looking ahead, Nasarawa United will travel to Umuahia, Abia State, to face second-placed Abia Warriors on Sunday, 25th January 2026, before returning home to host nine-time league champions Enyimba on Wednesday, 28th January.

Coach Mangut Mbwas expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, saying:

“I am happy with the result today. We scored two early goals and created several opportunities, but the most important thing is that we secured the maximum points. I am pleased with our newly acquired mid-season players who are blending well with the established squad. We are rotating the team due to fatigue and illnesses. We treat each game individually and will now focus on our next match against Abia Warriors in Umuahia.”

Niger Tornadoes coach Mohammed Majin acknowledged his team’s slow start, stating:

“Not a bad game for us. We started slowly, which gave Nasarawa United the edge. Despite some tactical adjustments, we couldn’t convert our chances, but we will work to improve going forward.”

With the win, Nasarawa United aims to build momentum as they pursue a strong finish to the NPFL season, starting with their challenging away fixture against Abia Warriors.
