2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 4 Review: Nasarawa United Beat Wikki Tourists in Northern Derby

Posted : 15 September 2025

Nasarawa United, also known as the Solid Miners, continued their impressive start to the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a 1-0 home victory over league returnees Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi in their Matchday 4 clash at the Lafia City Stadium on Sunday evening.

Youngster Garba Mohammed scored the solitary goal in the 37th minute, securing back-to-back home wins for Nasarawa United. Both teams are now level on seven points and goal difference on the NPFL log, but the victory propels the Solid Miners to fifth place, having earned seven points from a possible twelve.

Coach Mangut Mbwas praised his players for their disciplined performance. “It’s a thing of joy to get the maximum points against a difficult team that’s very mobile and confident on the ball. We counter-pressed effectively, and one of those chances gave us the goal. From there, we refused them the opportunity to build from the rear,” he said.

Mbwas also explained the strategic use of Anas Yusuf from the bench. “Since he returned from national duty with the home-based Super Eagles and ahead of receiving his highest goal scorer award in Abuja, we have been alternating his training. This is part of his physical conditioning to gradually match up with other players, and we believe he will regain his top form soon.”

The match attracted several dignitaries, including the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, Aide to the Governor on Sports Affairs Comrade Hamza Ibrahim Moyi, and State Football Association Chairman Salisu Galadima. Nasarawa United Chairman Solomon Babanjah hosted the guests, while a large crowd of fans cheered on the Solid Miners.

Nasarawa United will now aim to maintain their momentum as they travel to Yenagoa to face Bayelsa United in Matchday 5, before returning home on Sunday, September 28, to host Northern rivals Katsina United in Matchday 6.
