2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 2: Nasarawa United FC Claims First Home Win Against Abia Warriors

Posted : 01 September 2025

Ugochukwu Leonard scored Nasarawa United's first goal, securing the Solid Miners their first win of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season with a stunning 10th-minute strike from just outside the box against CAF Confederation Cup-bound Abia Warriors at the Lafia City Stadium on Match Day 2.

Adah Umar delivered the ball to the freestanding attacking sensation in the opponents' danger zone, and Leonard wasted no time, unleashing a powerful shot that beat Sharp Uzoigwe in goal for the Umuahia-based side.

With multiple attempts on goal from both sides, it was the Solid Miners who proved superior, claiming all three points and bouncing back swiftly from last Wednesday's defeat to Niger Tornadoes on the road.

Sunday’s result places Nasarawa United in 9th position with three points, while Abia Warriors sit 10th with the same number of points.

The Solid Miners will next travel to Aba, Abia State, to face sixth-placed Enyimba FC on Sunday, 7th September 2025.

Visibly delighted, Head Coach Mangut Mbwas praised his team’s performance.

"My players came out strong from the first half, creating a lot of opportunities. Even though our opponents had their moments, I think we deserved the maximum points.

"I also respect our opponents because they played as a compact unit from defense to attack.

"We are still building our team, as I am new at the club, but with time, we will get everything right," he said.

Abia Warriors Head Coach Imama Amapakabo reflected on the loss:

"We lost, but we need to review our performance and work on what we could improve.

"The game was ours to win or lose, but we were not clinical in front of goal. Ultimately, we lost the game ourselves.

"Overall, it was not a bad game, except for the scoreline," he added.
