2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 8 Review: Nasarawa United Extend Unbeaten Run with 2–1 Win Over Rangers

Posted : 13 October 2025

Nasarawa United extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a 2–1 win over Rangers, maintaining their lead at the top of the NPFL table.

Nasarawa United FC extended their unbeaten run to five consecutive matches with a 2–1 victory over Rangers International FC of Enugu on Sunday in a thrilling 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 8 encounter — a historic feat in the club’s history.

The visitors, Rangers, drew first blood in the 19th minute through Wisdom Ebirim, but Anas Yusuf, last season’s NPFL top scorer, leveled from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute to make it 1–1 going into halftime.

The decisive moment came in the 61st minute when John Joshua, an unlikely hero, latched onto a long cross from Anas Yusuf and calmly slotted home to send the Lafia City Stadium — packed with dignitaries including the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu — into wild celebrations.

The victory strengthened the Solid Miners’ grip on the top of the NPFL standings, taking their tally to 19 points from eight games, four points clear of second-placed Abia Warriors.

Coach Mangut Mbwas expressed delight after the hard-fought win:

“I’m very happy with today’s result. It wasn’t a smooth game, but you can’t expect all matches to be easy. The boys responded well after a shaky first half and got the winning goal.

We train everyone to be a goalscorer — the team isn’t built around one player, and that’s why we’re progressing well. Against Ikorodu City FC next, we’re confident we can win anywhere,” he said.

He also urged the relevant authorities to address the challenges of long-distance travel for league fixtures, noting that the team remains self-motivated despite the difficulties.

Goal scorer Anas Yusuf expressed joy at finding the net again:

“I’m happy to score my second goal of the season. I’ll keep working hard and hope we continue winning so we can challenge for the league title,” he said.

Nasarawa United will next travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City FC on Sunday, October 19, 2025, before returning to Lafia to host Remo Stars, last season’s champions.
