Nasarawa Amazons emerged as champions of the inaugural Governor Douye Diri Female Pre-season Football Tournament following an exciting week of competition among 10 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) teams.
The tournament, aimed at preparing NWFL teams for the upcoming season slated for next month, concluded with Nasarawa Amazons defeating host Bayelsa Queens 5–3 on penalties after a goalless draw during regulation time at Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa. Joy Igbokwe of Nasarawa Amazons was named the best player of the tournament.
In the third-place playoff, Edo Queens defeated Bayelsa Princesses 2–0, having lost 5–3 on penalties to Bayelsa Queens in the semi-finals. Bayelsa Princesses were also beaten 1–0 by Nasarawa Amazons in their semi-final match.
Robin Apreala, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Bayelsa Queens, emphasized that the tournament was not solely about winning but served as a platform to prepare teams for the new season. He praised all participants for their efforts and acknowledged Governor Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and Commissioner for Sports Development Daniel Igali for funding the tournament.
Meanwhile, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, expressed satisfaction with Nasarawa Amazons’ performance, noting that the current squad is younger, more dedicated, and better prepared than last season. He attributed the team’s success to the governor’s unwavering commitment to sports development and expressed confidence that Nasarawa Amazons would be strong contenders for the NWFL title this season.
Yakubu also commended the Bayelsa Government for assembling the country’s top female teams, highlighting that the tournament helped identify areas of improvement ahead of the new season.
