Nasarawa Amazons have received a ₦1 million cash reward from the Nasarawa State Government following their successful defence of the Governor Douye Diri Women’s Pre-Season Tournament title in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The reward was announced by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Jibril Abdullahi Ibrahim, during a reception for the team at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in Lafia on Wednesday.
The commissioner commended the players, technical crew and management for their impressive performance, which saw them emerge champions while representing Northern Nigeria as the tournament’s only team from the region.
The Lafia-based side defeated Bayelsa Queens 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in the semi-finals before overcoming Delta Queens 1-0 in the final through Ochanya Isaiah’s decisive contribution. Isaiah also emerged as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Ibrahim said the ₦1 million reward would be shared among the players, technical crew, State Football Association and Supporters Club in recognition of their contributions to the team’s success.
He urged the players to sustain their winning mentality ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) season.
The commissioner also disclosed plans to arrange a presentation of the trophy to Deputy Governor Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe and Governor Abdullahi Sule to celebrate the team’s achievement.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Stephen Iliya Sasetu, praised the team for their determination, resilience and ability to overcome strong opposition during the competition.
Responding, the club’s Chairperson, Hussaina Suleiman Nagogo, appreciated the state government and Governor Sule for their continued support.
Nagogo expressed confidence that the team would reward the government’s investment by winning the league title and securing a continental ticket before the end of the governor’s administration in 2027.
She added that the squad had been strengthened with new players to improve its competitiveness in the forthcoming campaign.
Assistant Coach Oluwasheyi Michael attributed the tournament victory to the players’ determination, hard work and divine grace.
The reception concluded with team captain Confidence Nwoha, Michael and Nagogo presenting the championship trophy to the commissioner.
Nagogo subsequently decorated Ibrahim and Sasetu with gold medals in recognition of their support for the club.
Nasarawa Amazons will now turn their attention to the new NWFL season, hoping to translate their pre-season success into domestic league honours.
