The first stanza of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL26) came to a thrilling conclusion in Lafia as Nasarawa Amazons returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4–2 victory over Group B leaders FC Robo.
The Matchday 9 encounter, played at the Lafia Township Stadium, kicked off at exactly 4:00 pm local time and produced six goals in a pulsating showdown.
First-Half Brilliance
The Amazons wasted no time asserting themselves. In the 2nd minute, right-back-turned-winger Sunday Ohunene rose highest to head home a delightful cross from Alani Jumoke, sending the home fans into early celebrations.
However, FC Robo responded swiftly, drawing level in the 14th minute to briefly silence the Lafia crowd.
The hosts restored their lead just two minutes later. In the 16th minute, Isaiah Ochanya was brought down inside the box, and Ayatsea Hembafan calmly converted from the penalty spot to make it 2–1.
With confidence flowing, the Amazons struck again in the 40th minute as Alani Jumoke capped off an impressive first-half display with a composed finish to give the home side a 3–1 advantage heading into the break.
Second-Half Control
Nasarawa Amazons carried their momentum into the second half, adding a fourth goal in the 46th minute to tighten their grip on the encounter.
The visitors showed resilience and reduced the deficit in the 76th minute, but it proved too little, too late as the game ended 4–2 in favour of the Lafia Landladies.
League Standings Update
Before the match, Nasarawa Amazons sat third in Group B with 15 points.
The victory lifts them to 18 points, moving them up to second place — four points behind leaders FC Robo, who remain top with 21 points.
The win also serves as a strong response following last week’s away defeat to Sunshine Queens in Akure.
Coaches’ Reactions
Christopher Danjuma Musa (Nasarawa Amazons)
The Technical Adviser expressed delight at securing all three points:
“I feel happy that we picked the three points. It’s crucial for us at this stage. The girls showed determination, unlike our last match in Akure where we lost.
That defeat was due to the break before the game, which affected match fitness.
We are battle-ready for the second stanza next month. I believe we will improve and put smiles on the faces of our fans and the state at large.”
The FC Robo Head Coach, Emmanuel Osahon, acknowledged the strength of the Amazons.
He expressed satisfaction with his players’ effort despite the defeat, attributing the loss to fatigue and the youthful nature of his squad.
He promised to rebuild the team’s confidence ahead of the second stanza.
As the first round of NWFL26 wraps up, the Group B title race remains wide open.
With momentum firmly on their side, Nasarawa Amazons will look to build on this strong finish when the league resumes.
