Napoli missed the opportunity to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League after suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat at home to Bologna on Monday. The result leaves Antonio Conte’s side under pressure with only two Serie A matches remaining.
Jonathan Rowe scored an acrobatic volley deep into stoppage time to hand Bologna a memorable victory at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Napoli remain second in the standings, but their advantage over fourth-placed AS Roma has been reduced to three points.
The hosts had entered the match knowing that a victory would guarantee a top-four finish because of their superior head-to-head record against Roma this season. Instead, Napoli now face a tense finish to the campaign as both Roma and Como 1907 remain within touching distance in the race for European qualification.
Napoli’s recent form has become a growing concern, with the former league champions collecting only five points from their last five league matches. Conte’s team will now need positive results against Pisa Sporting Club and Udinese Calcio to avoid slipping further in the standings.
Conte could also be without midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for the upcoming trip to Pisa after the Belgian suffered a facial injury during training. The Napoli coach revealed before kickoff that De Bruyne required four stitches after splitting his cheek open in an accidental clash of heads.
