The Nigeria Premier Football League has officially announced the calendar layout for the upcoming 2026/27 domestic season. This update followed a high-level stakeholders' meeting held in Abuja involving key administrators from across the country. Representatives from the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, and various club owners attended the meeting to finalize the schedule.
League officials tentatively fixed the opening weekend of the new campaign for August 28 to 30, 2026. The action-packed season will run through thirty-eight matchdays and is scheduled to conclude on May 30, 2027. This newly approved calendar provides clubs with structural certainty; it also ensures seamless alignment with international football schedules.
A major highlight of the upcoming campaign is the introduction of a historic financial reward package. National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko announced that the league champions will receive a minimum of N1 billion. The runners-up will take home N500 million; the third-placed team will earn N300 million. This represents the largest winner's purse in the history of Nigerian domestic club football.
Dikko described the massive prize structure as a deliberate effort to improve the commercial value of the league. The authorities believe the incentive will boost professionalism and enhance competitiveness among the top-flight clubs. Furthermore, these extensive financial reforms are expected to attract significant corporate sponsorship into the local game.
The domestic football schedule also fully incorporates the fixtures for the prestigious President Federation Cup. State qualifying matches are scheduled to begin in early February 2027 to avoid unnecessary congestion. This strategic planning will allow teams to manage their player squads effectively across both major competitions.
The league will feature four newly promoted clubs from the Nigeria National League after their successful promotion campaigns. Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees, and Doma United secured top-flight status for the upcoming football year. These ambitious new teams will replace the four relegated clubs that dropped out of the division.
The new arrivals will challenge the defending champions, Enugu Rangers, who recently claimed their ninth league title. The Flying Antelopes finished at the top of the standings after a highly competitive 2025/26 campaign. Pre-season preparations will begin with strict club licensing compliance and stadium facility inspections across all venues.
