The race for the Nigeria Premier Football League title took a dramatic turn this weekend as Enugu Rangers climbed to the top of the standings. This shift follows a significant defeat for Rivers United and a resilient victory for the Flying Antelopes at home.
Rivers United traveled to face Kano Pillars in a high-stakes encounter that remained deadlocked for most of the match. Abdullahi Musa broke the stalemate for the hosts in the 81st minute. Rivers United appeared to have rescued a point when Handsome Surveyor equalized in the 89th minute.
However, the drama peaked deep into stoppage time. Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa found the back of the net to secure a -1 victory for Kano Pillars. This result dealt a heavy blow to Finidi George’s title ambitions.
Enugu Rangers took full advantage of the slip by Rivers United. They faced Enyimba in a tense Oriental Derby at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. Despite falling behind to a goal from their former player Wonah Williams, Rangers mounted a swift comeback.
Defenders Chidozie Iwundu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi scored within a ten-minute window during the second half. The 2-1 win moves Rangers to 59 points. They now sit one point ahead of Rivers United at the summit of the table.
Shooting Stars Sports Club also maintained their push for continental football. They traveled to Maiduguri and recorded a 2-1 comeback win against El-Kanemi Warriors. After John Zakka put the hosts ahead, substitute Qamar Adegoke scored a second-half brace to seal the points.
Defending champions Remo Stars stayed in the hunt with a convincing 3-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in Ikenne. Goals from Victor Mbaoma, Adedayo Olamilekan, and Samuel Anakwe ensured a comfortable afternoon. Nasarawa United matched that scoreline in their fixture against Warri Wolves.
In Jos, Plateau United played out a 1-1 draw with Kun Khalifat. Mmesoma Nnorom gave the visitors an early lead before Alao Danbani equalized for the home side. Meanwhile, Kwara United defeated Barau FC 2-1 to strengthen their mid-table position.
The league will now take a brief hiatus for the FA Cup finals scheduled for next weekend. Match Day 36 fixtures are currently slated to resume on May 2 and 3.
