Mourinho Slams Timing of Vinicius Jr’s Four-Match Ban

Posted : 15 October 2026

Jose Mourinho has criticised the timing of the announcement of Vinicius Jr’s four-match suspension, describing the decision as disrespectful and questioning why it was communicated just hours before a crucial European fixture. The Brazilian forward received the punishment after being sent off during Real Madrid’s 1-0 LaLiga victory over Villarreal on Saturday for pulling an opponent’s hair.

The suspension represents a significant setback for Mourinho’s side, with Vinicius set to miss several important league matches, including the highly anticipated Clasico against Barcelona. The Catalan club hold a six-point advantage over Real Madrid at the top of the LaLiga standings, increasing the importance of the upcoming fixtures.

Vinicius featured in Real Madrid’s dramatic Champions League encounter against Roma, which ended in a remarkable 4-3 victory after the Spanish side recovered from a 3-1 deficit late in the match. However, Mourinho was clearly unhappy with the timing of the disciplinary announcement, which he said had disrupted his team’s preparations.

Speaking after the match, the Portuguese coach questioned why the suspension could not have been announced either earlier or the following morning. He argued that informing a player of such a significant punishment shortly before kick-off was unnecessary and unfair, particularly when the match carried importance for Spanish football’s European reputation.

Mourinho also expressed frustration that the news emerged when the team was travelling to the stadium, suggesting that the timing showed little consideration for the player or the club. He insisted that the circumstances surrounding the announcement deserved scrutiny.

Mourinho Questions LaLiga Fixture Scheduling

Beyond the suspension, Mourinho raised concerns about the scheduling of Real Madrid’s upcoming matches. He pointed to the demanding sequence of travelling to Athens to face AEK Athens on November 4 before playing Valencia away on November 7, warning that the short turnaround would leave his players with limited recovery time.

The coach argued that the schedule was particularly unreasonable given the difficulty of the Valencia fixture and its proximity to the international break. He rejected suggestions that television scheduling requirements justified the arrangement, insisting that modern football authorities should find better ways to protect teams competing across multiple competitions.

Mourinho described the situation as a lack of respect and suggested that supporters deserved a clearer explanation of the decisions affecting their club. He also vowed to speak out about what he believes are unfair practices in Spanish football.

Real Madrid Secure Dramatic Victory Over Roma

Despite his frustration over the suspension announcement, Mourinho enjoyed a memorable result on the pitch as Real Madrid fought back to defeat Roma 4-3 in the Champions League. His side had struggled for much of the contest and found themselves trailing 3-1 after Donyell Malen scored twice for the Italian team.

Madrid's late revival was driven by a series of substitutions that changed the momentum. Carlos Espí and Endrick both scored after coming off the bench, while Arda Güler supplied two assists during the comeback. Antonio Rudiger then struck the winning goal in the closing moments to complete the turnaround.

Mourinho admitted that he had not anticipated such an extraordinary finish but explained that he believed his substitutes could make a difference during the final 20 minutes. The victory gave Madrid six points from their opening two Champions League league-phase matches.

The result offered a positive conclusion to an emotionally charged evening for Mourinho, although the absence of Vinicius in the coming domestic fixtures presents a significant challenge. With the Clasico approaching and the title race intensifying, Real Madrid will need to find alternative attacking solutions while their Brazilian star serves his suspension.
