Mourinho Eyes Victor Osimhen as Catalyst for Real Madrid’s Return to Glory

Posted : 12 May 2026

The landscape of Spanish football is bracing for a seismic shift as reports intensify linking José Mourinho with a dramatic return to Real Madrid. After a dismal 2025/26 campaign that saw Madrid finish trophyless and a staggering 14 points behind champions Barcelona, club president Florentino Pérez is reportedly ready to activate Mourinho’s €3 million release clause at Benfica. Central to Mourinho’s rebuilding plan is Nigerian powerhouse Victor Osimhen, whom the Portuguese manager views as the tactical solution to Madrid’s scoring woes.

Mourinho’s admiration for Osimhen dates back to their encounters in Serie A. The veteran coach famously compared Osimhen to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, noting the striker’s rare combination of physical dominance, blistering pace, and elite aerial ability. Mourinho reportedly believes Osimhen’s presence would finally allow Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior to return to their preferred wider positions, restoring a tactical balance that has been missing since the departure of Karim Benzema.

Osimhen’s current form justifies the hype and the steep €100m–€150m valuation set by Galatasaray. In the 2025/26 season, the Super Eagles forward has been sensational, recording:

  • Goals: 22 (across all competitions)

  • Assists: 8

  • Success: Led Galatasaray to a consecutive Süper Lig title and the Champions League knockout stages.

However, Real Madrid faces a direct challenge from their rivals, Barcelona. With Robert Lewandowski expected to depart this summer, Hansi Flick reportedly views Osimhen as the perfect high-pressing spearhead to maintain Barça’s domestic crown. Despite the heavy interest, Galatasaray Vice President Abdullah Kavukçu recently stated that no official offers have been reviewed, emphasizing that the club remains committed to keeping their star man.

As the summer transfer window approaches, the battle for Osimhen’s signature is set to become a proxy war between Spain’s two giants. For Mourinho, securing the Nigerian would be the definitive first step in his mission to "dethrone" a dominant Barcelona and return Real Madrid to the pinnacle of European football.
