Mourinho Backs Vinicius as Real Madrid Seek Best Form from Brazilian Star

Vinicius Junior remains a central figure at Real Madrid after extending his contract with the Spanish giants until June 2032. The Brazilian has played a key role in two of the club’s recent Champions League triumphs, scoring in the 2022 and 2024 finals, and Real Madrid continue to regard him as an important part of their future.

However, fitting Vinicius into the same attacking structure as Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham has presented tactical challenges. Jose Mourinho has acknowledged the difficulty of balancing so much attacking quality but believes the three players can operate effectively together.

Vinicius has made a productive statistical start to the campaign but has yet to consistently produce the decisive moments that previously made him one of Europe's most dangerous forwards. His display against Inter Milan in the Champions League was another example, with the Brazilian struggling to make a major impact in attack despite working hard for the team.

Mourinho strongly defended Vinicius after the 2-1 victory over Inter, insisting that the forward deserves his respect and support. The coach said Vinicius knows he is not currently at his peak but is working harder than ever in training and matches to return to his best.

The Brazilian was also subjected to some boos from supporters when he was substituted during the Inter match. Mourinho accompanied him towards the bench, highlighting his backing for the player despite the criticism from sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd.

Mourinho pointed to Vinicius' performances against Benfica last season as an example of what he can produce when operating at full capacity. He believes the forward has the ability to decide matches and expects that level to return.

Vinicius' defensive contribution has also impressed his manager. Against Inter, he made nine recoveries, demonstrating the willingness to contribute away from the ball that Mourinho has repeatedly demanded from his attacking players.

Real Madrid will now return to LaLiga action against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, looking to respond to their 1-0 defeat by Real Betis in their previous league match. Barcelona currently lead the early title race, making another slip-up particularly costly for Mourinho's side.

Mourinho has continued to express confidence in Vinicius ahead of the Rayo fixture, arguing that the Brazilian's previous achievements explain the high expectations surrounding him. For now, the Madrid coach appears willing to give his star forward time to rediscover the ruthless form that made him one of the club's most influential players.
