Mosports FC’s impressive push for promotion from the Nationwide League One (NLO1) came to a heartbreaking end on Thursday following a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Green Beret FC in the decisive playoff clash at the Nasara Stadium, Kofan Doka, Zaria.
The winner-takes-all encounter started on a disastrous note for Mosports as Green Beret wasted no time stamping their authority on the game. Gbaa Sevav silenced the Mosports camp with an early strike in the 2nd minute before Adi Dan doubled the advantage in the 24th minute, leaving the youthful side with a daunting task.
Despite the early setback, Mosports returned from the break with renewed energy and purpose, dominating large spells of the second half in a spirited attempt to rescue the contest.
Their persistence paid off in the 54th minute when red-hot forward Jeremiah Faniwa calmly finished to reduce the deficit. The goal was Faniwa’s fourth in five matches, underlining his importance to the team throughout the campaign.
Inspired by the goal, Mosports poured forward relentlessly in search of an equaliser. Ibrahim Haruna dictated play from midfield while the energetic Usiju Ularju Papka consistently troubled the Green Beret defence with his attacking runs and creativity.
However, despite sustained pressure and several promising moments, Mosports were unable to find the crucial second goal as Green Beret held firm to secure qualification.
Although the defeat ended their promotion hopes, Mosports left the competition with plenty of positives. The team, largely made up of young and relatively inexperienced players, earned valuable exposure competing against more established opposition.
Speaking after the encounter, Mosports FC CEO, Raymond Moses Udofeh, praised the resilience and fighting spirit displayed by his players throughout the campaign.
He described the experience as an important learning curve for the young squad, insisting the club’s long-term project remains on course.
Udofeh also commended the organisers of the Nationwide League One for providing a strong developmental platform for emerging football talents across the country.
According to him, the league continues to serve as an important avenue for young players to gain visibility, experience organised football, and build professional careers.
Though their NLO1 journey ended in disappointment, Mosports FC depart Zaria with their heads held high after laying what appears to be a solid foundation for future success.
The narrow playoff loss highlights the potential of the youthful squad to compete at a high level. By building on the valuable exposure gained against experienced opponents, the club is well-positioned for future promotion campaigns. The dedication shown by the players and management ensures that Mosports FC remains a team to watch in Nigerian football development.
