Morocco secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout rounds after producing an impressive comeback to defeat Haiti 4-2 in Atlanta on Wednesday. Despite trailing by two goals at one stage, the Atlas Lions showed their resilience and attacking quality to turn the match around and finish the group stage on a high.
The victory left Morocco level on seven points with Brazil at the top of Group C. However, the North Africans were forced to settle for second place due to an inferior goal difference after Brazil's 3-0 win over Scotland. Morocco will now face the winners of Group F in Monterrey on Monday as they continue their quest for World Cup success.
Captain Achraf Hakimi was one of Morocco's standout performers, delivering a commanding display on both ends of the pitch. The dynamic full-back not only found the net but also contributed an assist, constantly threatening Haiti with his runs down the flank. Midfielder Ismael Saibari continued his excellent tournament form by scoring for the third consecutive game, helping his side level the contest before halftime.
Bilal El Khannouss and Neil El Aynaoui also impressed in midfield, combining energy, creativity and defensive work to drive Morocco forward. Veteran Sofyan Amrabat returned to the starting lineup and reminded supporters of the qualities that helped Morocco reach the World Cup semifinals in 2022, controlling key moments in the middle of the park.
Defensively, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a crucial late save to preserve Morocco's lead, while centre-backs Chadi Riad and Redouane Halhal handled Haiti's attacks effectively for much of the match. Although Anass Salah Eddine endured a difficult moment during Haiti's opening goal, Morocco recovered well as a team.
Substitute Sofiane Rahimi made a decisive impact after entering the game, scoring the go-ahead goal before creating another late strike. Youngster Gessime Yassine added the final goal in the closing stages, capping a memorable night for the 20-year-old and sealing an important victory for the Atlas Lions.
Having shown both character and firepower to overcome adversity, Morocco now turn their focus to the Round of 32, where a tougher challenge awaits against the winners of a highly competitive Group F.
